A lab dip is a swatch of fabric that is test dyed to hit a color standard. A dye house or color lab will dye a few small swatches of the actual quality fabric to find the formula that creates the best color match for that quality. A Pantone color reference or sometimes a swatch cut from another fabric is given to the lab to match. Typically, three similar shades of the reference color (options: a, b, c) will be submitted by the lab for review. Once an option is approved, the bulk dyeing process will begin. Lab dip development plays an important role in the dyeing process and is essential in the textile industry.
